Participant Eligibility:

  • Grades K-12 at schools in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties are eligible to participate.
  • Entries must be completed individually.
  • Each student is invited to submit one entry.

Entry Criteria:

Please tell us in 300 words or less what railroad safety means to you and why it is so important that we all practice safe behaviors near trains and railroad tracks.

Each entry must be:

  • Submitted via the contest Web site.
  • Submitted with a Metra Safety Essay Contest entry form.
  • The participant's original work.

Prizes:

One winner will be selected from each participating grade group, Elementary School (grades K-4), Middle School (grades 5-8) and High School (grades 9-12) and awarded a prize. Each winner will receive a Notebook Computer.

Additionally, winning entries will be featured on the Metra Contest Web site, on promotional safety materials and read at an upcoming Metra Board of Director’s meeting.

Deadline:


All entries must be received by March 1, 2009. Entries should be submitted via the contest Web site, www.metracontest.com.
Winners will be notified during the first week of May, 2009.

Metra is not responsible for lost or incomplete entries. Metra cannot return completed entries submitted as part of the contest. Once submitted, Metra becomes the owner of all essays and related materials.

By submitting materials for Metra's 2008-2009 Safety Essay Contest you are agreeing that all participants have parental consent to submit materials to Metra. Additionally, you are giving Metra permission to use the name, hometown and school of each participant. Pictures of winners also may be taken for and used in Metra promotional activities related to the essay contest.
